FIBA EuroBasket creates television history in Slovenia

MUNICH (FIBA EuroBasket 2017) – It was not only on the court on Sunday evening that Slovenia were creating history, with their success also leading to historical results in television viewership.

The tiny Central European nation had been living every moment with their team throughout the championship, with impressive numbers of fans across Slovenia tuning in to watch the fairytale run, led by MVP Goran Dragic and teen sensation Luka Doncic.

It amounted in the Final being the most-watched sports program in the history of Slovenian television, whilst the medal ceremony became the most-watched of all television broadcasts in Slovenia, since the introduction of ratings.

The numbers of viewers continued to grow every step of the way as Slovenia inched closer to achieving their first-ever FIBA EuroBasket medal. Already in the Quarter-Finals, when Slovenia took on Latvia in one of the all-time great FIBA EuroBasket clashes, 56 percent of all television viewers in Slovenia were watching the game, climbing to 69 percent when they stunned Spain in the Semi-Finals.

With basketball fever now sweeping the country, fans will not have to wait too long to see their heroes donning green again, with Slovenia opening their FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers, at home against Belarus on November 23.
