MIAMI (United States) – A total of 16 national teams from across the Americas will continue their journey toward the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar on November 27. The competition will run through February 2027, with only seven nations securing a spot on the world stage. What are the Americas Qualifiers?
The Americas Qualifiers is the tournament in which national teams from the region battle for the seven World Cup spots allocated to the Americas region. Introduced in 2017 ahead of the 2019 World Cup, the system was designed to give national teams more opportunities to play in front of their home fans. The format is based on home-and-away windows, making the process both more engaging and fair for players and supporters alike.
How many editions have been played?
Following the inaugural cycle leading to China 2019, the qualifiers continued for the 2023 World Cup in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines. This current cycle toward Qatar 2027 marks the third edition of the system, eight years since the first game was played under this format.

How did they qualify?
Of the 16 teams, 12 competed in the FIBA AmeriCup 2025 to earn a spot. Chile, Cuba, Jamaica, and Mexico advanced from the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Pre-Qualifiers.
When and where are the games played?

What is the competition format?
In the First Round, teams are split into four groups of four:
Group A: USA, DOM, MEX, NCA
Group B: PUR, CAN, BAH, JAM
Group C: BRA, VEN, COL, CHI
Group D: ARG, URU, PAN, CUB

Traditional regional powerhouses such as the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Canada— enter as early frontrunners to secure a World Cup berth. Each nation continues to develop talented players with high-level skills who compete in elite leagues around the world. Just behind them, the Dominican Republic has emerged as a strong contender, while Mexico and Venezuela also remain competitive. Several nations will look to make history. Chile aims to return to the World Cup for the first time since 1959. Colombia has not appeared since 1982, Uruguay since 1986, Cuba since 1994 and Panama since 2006.
