Belgium vs Spain - 19.30 CET
Belgium are potentially 40 minutes away from the successful title defense that they crave, although have only won once against Spain in their seven meetings in the competition - that momentous 2023 Final. They have moved through the gears in this competition but almost stalled in the Semi-Finals and that massive scare might be what drives them to be champions again - along with the quality of Julie Allemand, Julie Vanloo and Emma Meesseman.
Spain will play their seventh Final and last won the competition in 2019. Staggeringly the four-time champions have only ever won silverware when facing France (1993, 2013, 2017 and 2019). No doubt determined to extract revenge for their 2023 loss to the Cats, their success could be founded on their frontcourt. Teenage sensation Awa Fam and Raquel Carrera having posted incredible game-winning displays in the Semi-Final and Quarter-Final.
Game history: Belgium won the 2023 Final in Ljubljana as they claimed a famous 64-58 success. They also beat this Spanish side in the Quarter-Finals last year at Paris 2024 with a commanding 79-66 victory. Spain last beat Belgium in FIBA Women's EuroBasket back in 2017 when they won 68-52 in the Semi-Finals.
Star player: Emma Meesseman could be about to secure successive MVP titles and few would back against this coming to fruition. Visibly frustrated in the Semi-Final with Italy when her team almost inexplicably flushed their title away, will the legendary forward now channel this into a typically majestic display to take her team to glory?
Key matchup: There's no doubt Julie Allemand continues to make this Cats team tick. She orchestrates absolutely everything when they are at their very best. Tasked with disrupting that flow will be Spanish playmaker Mariona Ortiz. The veteran will use all of her experience and length to contain and shackle her opponent.
X-factor: There is tremendous pressure on the starting five of Belgium to get it done, whereas Miguel Mendez has much more rotation and depth of choices. That is clearly underlined in bench scoring, with Belgium netting 16.6 points per game compared to a phenomenal 42.4 points per outing for Spain - much of that down to Carrera.
Did you know?
Spain (85.8%) and Belgium (84.3%) have the two highest free-throw percentages in the competition
Belgium (57.8%) and Spain (55.1%) have the two highest 2-point shooting percenategs in the competition.
Alba Torrens has scored 746 points and needs 3 more to become the 7th all-time scorer in the competition. She scored only eight points in the 2023 Final after scoring 18 and 21 in her two previous appearances in the title game during 2017 and 2013 respectively.
