Brazil finishes Group Phase undefeated, Dantas surpasses 400 Women’s AmeriCup points

    Game Report

The South American squad defeated El Salvador to extend their winning streak to 12 games, on a day when their star power forward moved into second place on the latest FIBA Women’s AmeriCup scoring list.

SANTIAGO (Chile) – Brazil (4-0) delivered an impressive offensive performance, dominating El Salvador (0-4) from start to finish with a 106-49 victory to remain perfect atop Group A at the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025. Damiris Dantas made history by scoring 21 points, bringing her career total in the Women’s AmeriCup to 401. The power forward is now the second leading scorer in the tournament (since 2003), trailing only Cuba’s Yamara Amargo (523).

    Turning point

Brazil imposed its physical dominance on both ends of the court and quickly set the tone with a 24-10 run in the first quarter. By halftime, the lead had grown to 48-25, and with such a wide margin, head coach Pokey Chatman was able to give minutes to every player on the roster. All 12 Brazilian players saw at least nine minutes of action, and each player scored at least two points.

    Player of the game

Dantas tallied her 21 points in just 19:17 minutes of play. The Indiana Fever forward shot an outstanding 8-of-12 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from three-point range. Kamilla Cardoso also showcased her WNBA talent (Chicago Sky), posting a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, along with 4 assists and 3 steals. Young point guard Bella Nascimento stepped up with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Thayna Silva nearly recorded a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Vitoria Marcelino stood out also with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Brandi Harvey-Carr led El Salvador with 15 points and 5 rebounds in their final game of the tournament. Hillary Martínez added 12 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

    Stats don’t lie

Brazil shot 51 percent from the field (38-75), including an impressive 50 percent from three-point range (13-26). The team also recorded 31 assists. Brazil’s 60 rebounds were its second-highest total in a single AmeriCup game (since 2003). Their record is 63, set against Ecuador in 2015. This marked the 13th time Brazil has won a game by 50 points or more in Women’s AmeriCup history. In addition to her scoring milestone, Dantas also grabbed 2 rebounds, bringing her career total in the tournament to 171, placing her eighth in that category (since 2003).

    Bottom line

In the Quarter-Finals, scheduled for Friday, July 4, Brazil will face the fourth-place team from Group B. With this win, the team extended its AmeriCup winning streak to 12 games.

    They said

"It was the type of performance we were expecting today. Forty minutes of high-level offense and defense. It didn’t matter if the veterans or the younger players were on the court— our execution was consistently high. We shared the ball really well. We learned and continued preparing for the next round," said Pokey Chatman, Brazil’s head coach.
