Brazil’s winning streak among best in Women’s AmeriCup modern history

    Short Read

The win against Dominican Republic on Tuesday extended Brazil’s winning streak to 11 games, representing the fourth double-digit streak at AmeriCup since 2003.

SANTIAGO (Chile) – Brazil’s winning streak has officially reached rarified air. The victory on Tuesday over Dominican Republic at Centro de Deportes Colectivos in Santiago, Chile, was Brazil’s 11th consecutive FIBA Women’s AmeriCup win – the fourth double-digit streak at the event in the modern era.

Brazil’s run of dominance started by winning the third-place game in 2021 before sweeping its slate in 2023 (7-0) on the way to the title. In the current edition, the team is 3-0 after beating Argentina and Canada on Saturday and Monday, respectively. Star centers Damiris Dantas and Kamilla Cardoso are key figures across both tournaments, with Alana Gonçalo, Emanuely De Oliveira and Aline Moura also being from the 2023 squad. Veteran Tainá Paixao was instrumental last time around, too, but is not part of the roster this year. This is also Brazil’s second-longest winning streak after winning 16 straight games between 2007 and 2013. On that occasion, the South Americans got it going in the bronze medal game in 2007 before winning gold in 2009 (5-0) and 2011 (6-0). The squad then won their first four games of the 2013 edition before losing to Cuba in the Semi-Finals.

Cardoso and Dantas won the title in 2023

United States owns the longest winning streak this century after winning 19 straight between 2007 and 2023. That included both a long absence (USA didn’t participate in AmeriCup between 2007 and 2019) and back-to-back titles in 2007, 2019 and 2021. Perhaps not coincidentally, it was this recent iteration of Brazil that stopped them. Brazil beat them twice in León, México, two summers ago (first in the Group Stage and then in Final). Canada also won 17 in a row between 2015 and 2019, including consecutive crowns in 2015 and 2017. Brazil plays again on Wednesday against El Salvador in its last game of the Group Stage. If the Brazilians were to sweep the rest of their games in this edition, the streak would extend to 16 games. All data is compiled from 2003 onwards.
