MIAMI (United States) – Eight national teams will compete in the FIBA U18 AmeriCup 2026 starting June 1. The main objective is to secure one of the four available spots for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027. The next feat is whether a team can finally end the USA dominance, which arrives with seven consecutive championships. This edition of the tournament will introduce a new competition format. The first-place teams from each group will now advance directly to the Semi-Finals, while the second-place teams will face the third-place teams from the opposite group in the Quarter-Finals to battle for the remaining two Semi-Final spots. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at how the two groups shape up.
Group A
The favorite: United States
With seven straight titles, there is no way to place them anywhere else. As usual, they have a loaded roster with elite prospects— several of whom are projected future NBA players. The headliner is forward Bruce Branch, who has already been projected as a potential No. 1 pick in the 2027 NBA Draft by several scouting outlets. Point guard Malachi Jordan and fellow forward Colben Landrew are also among the standout names.
The underdog: Mexico
The FIBA U17 Centrobasket Championship was not held last year, which puts teams from Central America and the Caribbean at a disadvantage. They lost an important competitive window and qualified for this tournament through the rankings. In that sense, Mexico appears to be one step behind the rest of their group rivals.
The key matchup: Argentina vs. Brazil
The South American classic is always special, and this time, in theory, it should determine the second-place team in the group. Considering the new format, where the second and third-place finishers cross over with teams from the opposite group, winning this matchup provides the advantage of facing a more favorable opponent. The two teams met in last year’s South American U17 Championship Final, where Brazil claimed the title with a convincing 98-77 victory.
Group B
The favorite: Canada
Canada features a physical and athletic roster, and that makes a major difference at this level. Big man Paul Osaruyi is the team’s top prospect, representing strength. Although the final roster had not been announced at the time this article was written, CJ Roberts, Deng Ngor and Malik Olajuwon (son of the legendary Hakeem Olajuwon) are also expected to play important roles.
The underdog: Dominican Republic
A talented team. The addition of Enmanuel Valera, who has emerged at the high school level in the United States, and Antonio Pemberton, significantly boosts their potential. However, it is hard to overlook the fact that the team did not compete at the U17 level.
The key matchup: Puerto Rico vs. Venezuela
Puerto Rico’s chances rise considerably with the presence of Felipe Quiñones, one of the continent’s top talents. The shooting guard and his explosive offensive ability are capable of changing the fate of games almost single-handedly. Venezuela, meanwhile, has regained competitiveness at the youth level with this generation. They are qualifying for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup for the first time, which will be played later this June, and has been characterized by thier team-oriented style. Kevin Gutiérrez, Williams Anillo and Deiker Torres lead the charge for the South Americans.
