MUNICH (Germany) - The road to FIBA EuroBasket 2025 glory is about to begin, with 24 nations vying for the crown. Leading them are some of Europe's finest coaches, a mix of fresh faces and seasoned veterans.
Among the longest-serving are Iceland's Craig Pedersen, who has been in charge since 2014, and Spain's Sergio Scariolo, a four-time EuroBasket champion who began his first reign more than a decade ago.
It will be the final chapter for the Italian mastermind on the Spanish sidelines, with Scariolo announcing it will be his last event with the Spanish national team. The 62-year-old has guided Spain since 2015, winning the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and four EuroBasket titles alongisde other accomplishments.
Already a legened, he now has the chance to climb to second all-time in EuroBasket crowns, behind only Alexander Gomelsky's six.
Two former playing icons will be making their debuts as national team head coaches at a major event: Vassilis Spanoulis with Greece and Alex Mumbru with reigning world champions Germany.
Spanoulis, who lifted the EuroBasket title as a player in 2005, now joins forces with Giannis Antetokounmpo ina new role to chase new glory for Greece. Meanwhile, FIBA Basketball World Cup 2006 winner and FIBA EuroBasket 2009 champion Mumbru took over from Gordon Herbert in 2024 and faces potentially an even higher bar as Germany's head coach.
Mumbru is also one of five coaches appointed in 2024, with the newest member of national team coaching circle being Rimas Kurtinaitis, who took over at Lithuania in October.
