PARIS (France) - Victor Wembanyama will mark a new chapter in the young superstar's international career, one that goes far beyond representing his country at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers.

The San Antonio Spurs big man has been named as France's team captain for a busy run of games, beginning with friendly encounters against Serbia on August 20 and 23, before facing Slovenia at home on August 27 in the European Qualifiers and then travelling to face Sweden on August 30.

For Wembanyama, the captaincy feels like a full-circle moment and one that is richly deserved.

Being captain is first and foremost about setting an example, being a leader

"Being captain is first and foremost about setting an example, being a leader, through performance on the court, knowing the systems, the opponents, and bringing calm," Wembanyama stated.

"This window is a good opportunity to experience this new chapter with the coaching staff as captain. It's probably earlier than I expected, and likely earlier than everyone else expected. But it's not rushed either. I'm honored and excited. I wasn't expecting it until Freddy told me, but it's a great honor."

At just 22, Wembanyama is already one of the most recognizable players in world basketball. After three seasons in the NBA and a rapidly expanding résumé, he has established himself as the face of the Spurs and one of the sport's brightest stars.

    "I miss FIBA Basketball"

Yet despite everything he has achieved professionally, international basketball still holds a special place in his heart and carries extra significance.

"It carries more weight because it is worn for much shorter periods," he said to French media outlet L'Equipe.

"The intensity of an Olympic Games campaign, for example, is condensed into just a few weeks, so these are things that are experienced in the present moment. There are very few games in an international career, and every single one really counts."

Wembanyama has repeatedly expressed his desire to represent France and, above all, to help his country reach the summit of world basketball. That ambition came painfully close to reality at the 2024 Olympic Basketball Tournament in Paris.

Playing on home soil, France pushed the United States all the way in the gold-medal game, only to fall short. It was a remarkable run, but for Wembanyama, it also left a clear sense that there is still another step to take on the international stage.

Before that, Wembanyama's senior journey was built on a successful progression through the junior ranks, culminating in a runner-up finish at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Latvia in 2021.

He was outstanding throughout that tournament, averaging 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.7 blocks per game. But once again, France faced the United States in the Final and had to settle for silver.

Now, Wembanyama has another opportunity to change his international narrative.
