Day 5: France, Spain, Canada and USA looking foward to the Semi-Finals

DEBRECEN (Hungary) - The Semi-Finals lineup has been confirmed at the FIBA U17 Women's Basketball World Cup after France, Spain, Canada and USA all stormed into the last four of the tournament.

Fam Thiam is the baller that can...

Spain are looking forward to the Semi-Finals thanks mainly to the awesome Awa Fam Thiam who showed out in the 62-51 Quarter-Finals success against Australia. Her fantastic 12 points, 17 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists paced the win as Spain's transition ball, athleticism and sharp three-point shooting proved too much for a Sapphires side that went 1 of 12 from downtown.

Quick-fire France lock down Germany

France will face Spain in the Semi-Finals and will be hoping for the same kind of jump start they got in their 63-40 victory against Germany. The French side were rampant from the tip and suffocated their opponents with tight defense, meaning once they moved 20-4 ahead, it was a case of game over.

Dominique Malonga (photo above) again starred with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks, but it was a real team effort since  five players reached double-figures for points.

Familar formula for the real deal Canada

Canada have made the Semi-Finals of the competition for only the second time in their history and even if they must now face the mighty USA next, they will be thrilled to have reached this stage. It came courtesy of a convincing second half performance against Hungary when they came alive in the third quarter,  eventually contributing to a 70-49 win.

The formula was the usual one as Cassandre Prosper added an all-action 21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 blocks, while Toby Ann Fournier harvested a similarly dazzling 10 points, 14 rebounds, 5 blocks and 4 steals to hand the hosts a painful first loss.

Cambridge and Watkins put on a show for USA

USA booked a Saturday Semi-Finals date with their neighbors off the back of another epic display of superiority as they caught fire early and marched to a brilliant 112-38 victory against Japan. Jaloni Cambridge barely missed en-route to 15 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, while JuJu Watkins killed it and dropped 25 points and added 9 boards.

Jada Williams celebrating

More history for Egypt

Judy Elshebshery was outstanding for Egypt against Mexico

Having never won a game at the event coming to Debrecen, Egypt followed up their historic day one win against Korea by doubling their overall win tally in the competition by beating Mexico 67-57 in the classification games. Judy Elshebshery had a career night after going 9 of 10 from the field and finishing with 21 points.

Mali make it a great day for African hoops

Mali celebrated a first win at this edition, having lost all four previous games in Debrecen

There was a fantastic first win of the competition from Mali as they took down European opponents in the classification games with a 59-55 success against Belgium. It had looked like they might be allowing a great opportunity to slip through their fingers, but excellent last quarter defense restricted Belgium to a paltry 4 points. Mariam Ibrahim Sarr and Aminata Samassekou top scored with 14 and 12 points respectively.

A double for New Zealand and hat-trick for Slovenia

Ritorya Tamilo was a power at both ends of the floor for New Zealand

There was also a 65-58 triumph for New Zealand as they doubled their win tally by seeing off Argentina. A 12 point and 10 rebounds effort from Maia Jones was vital, with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 6 blocks even more impressive from Ritorya Tamilo.

First timers Slovenia racked up the third victory of their debut campaign in beating Korea 92-61, also recording their biggest ever win in the competition to date. Ajsa Sivka harvested 19 points, 6 rebounds 6 assists and 4 blocks.
