NMI Women Preparing for Micro Cup

SAIPAN (Northern Marianas Island) – The Northern Marianas Island (NMI) Women’s Team is gearing up for the FIBA Micronesian Cup 2022 in Guam with a versatile training schedule leading into the tournament.

Head Coach, Catherine Attao said the women are focused on solid teamwork as they rebuild their national women’s basketball identity.

“Our goal is to be prepared in every aspect of the game; mentally, physically, technically and our basketball IQ,” Attao said.   “We have been training three times a week, while assigning daily individual goals six days a week.

“Our team has been very actively involved in giving back to our community through conducting basketball clinics around the villages called the BOLA program and supporting our Interscholastic School Basketball Leagues by officiating the games and tables.”

NMI travelled to Guam earlier this year to play in the University of Guam Marianas Friendly Tournament, which provided the team with valuable on and off court experience in Guam ahead of the FIBA Micronesian Cup 2022.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to play in Guam in March and are looking forward to the FIBA Micronesian Cup 2022,” Attao said.  “Our women’s national program is in a rebuilding phase, so the opportunity to play against teams in the region will add to the depth of our program.

“I am very proud of how far our ladies have come to this point.  They continue to push and grow as a team.   We are excited for this competition under our new Northern Marianas Islands Basketball Federation leadership, who have been extremely supportive. ”

Our goal is to give our best in each game and learn
