Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Uruguay celebrate wins on opening day

MONTEVIDEO (FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2019) – The National Teams from Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Uruguay opened the 2018 edition of the South American U15 Championship with important wins.

Argentina opened the South American U15 Championship in Montevideo with a 72-64 win over Chile in Group A action. The Argentinians held on to the lead captured during the third quarter and withstood a late reaction from the Chilean team to celebrate the win, with Lucas di Mucci leading the way for the Argentinians with 19 points. Ty Jones led the Chilean squad with 18 points and 7 rebounds.

Brazil debuted at the South American U15 Championship with a powerful win over Paraguay 85-45. The Brazilians dominated from the get-go with a 26-10 first quarter. The team coached by Thelma Tavernari went on to win the remaining quarters to celebrate the victory. Eduardo Sanchez led the Brazilian squad with a 18-point and 10-rebound “double-double”.

Venezuela celebrated on opening day of the South American U15 Championship after defeating Colombia 64-54. After losing the first quarter by 2 points, the Venezuelans dominated the second quarter 20-6 to take a commanding lead on the scoreboard. Venezuela maintained safe distance and celebrated the win. Osmar Garcia led the Venezuelan offensive with a 12-point and 14-rebound “double-double”.

The host of the South American U15 Championship had a dominant debut against Ecuador. Uruguay dominated from the start of the game and captured a commanding lead after a 24-7 first quarter. Agustin Ubal led the scoring for the Uruguayans with 16 points.

The top three teams from the South American U15 Championship will qualify to the FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2019.
