Lyttle named in Spain's final roster for Nantes

GIJON (2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament) - Following Spain's 54-52 defeat at the hands of New Zealand in Gijon on Wednesday, head coach Lucas Mondelo confirmed the final roster for the 2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT).

Although Sancho Lyttle wasn't part of the team's early preparations due to her WNBA commitments with the Atlanta Dream, Mondelo has added the EuroBasket Women 2013 MVP to the team that will be competing to claim one of the five berths on offer to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic.

The WOQT runs from 13-19 June in Nantes, France, and the third-placed team at last summer's EuroBasket Women will face China and Venezuela in Group D.

If Spain can finish in the top two in the Group Phase, they will face a team from Group C - BelarusNigeria or Korea - in the Quarter-Finals. A victory in that game would see them punch their ticket for Rio. If they lose their Quarter-Final, Mondelo's team would need a win in the Fifth-Place game to reach the Olympics for the first time since 2008.

The play-caller took some positives from the defeat against New Zealand.

"This defeat came at the right time," Mondello said. "We must have our feet on the ground and admit that we have to improve things and work hard for the qualifiers [WOQT]. We would rather lose a game in the preparations than in the qualifiers."

Lyttle, who missed EuroBasket Women 2015, was named to the All-Star Five at the 2014 FIBA Women's World Championship

Astou Ndour, Nuria Martinez and Laura Herrera are the players that have been left out from the Spanish side that finished on the third step of the podium at last summer's EuroBasket Women, making way for Lyttle, 20-year-old Laura Quevedo and Leonor Rodriguez are part of the team for the WOQT.
