Wilson leads USA to gold as Americas quartet seals U19 Women's Worlds tickets

COLORADO SPRINGS (2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women) - A stunning display by A'ja Wilson headlined another gold medal success for the USA at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women as they claimed a spot at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women along with Canada, Argentina and Brazil.

Taking the distinguished MVP accolade, Wilson produced a phenomenal double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds as the USA breezed past Canada 104-74 in the title game and was unsurprisingly delighted to climb to the top of the podium.

"This game was special because it was the gold medal game," said Wilson.

"We took care of business and executed everything.

"Great things started to happen, and things fell into place - it was a great game."

Wilson is of no stranger to playing at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women and looks destined to appear in Russia next year, having already played in Lithuania in 2013 to considerable acclaim.

There was also a great deal of satisfaction for the legendary Dawn Staley, who held the USA coaching reins.

"This is what I'm used to, I think it's gold or failure," explained the play-caller, who also oversees matters in the hot-seat at the University of South Carolina.

"Every time I'm part of a USA Basketball team, we want to win gold. If we don't win gold, I don't think we do our country justice.

"I thought Canada played extremely well, I just thought overall, over a 40-minute period, we kept fresh legs in there and made them play a little bit quicker than they wanted to play.

"I thought our players just really, on both sides of the ball, executed the game plan."

The hosts secured their seventh-straight title at the tournament and eighth overall, going a magnificent 48-2 at the event since it was launched in 1988.

Canadian head coach Rich Chambers meanwhile was proud to have taken his side to the Final and declared: "The girls battled unbelievably hard and we couldn't be prouder of their performance.

"Hopefully, the team enjoyed their experience and I am very proud of how we represented Canada."

Shay Colley who also played at the last edition of the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women, had 16 points, while Bridget Carleton who recently starred for her nation at the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in the Czech Republic made a number of telling contributions throughout.

The North American duo will be joined by South American rivals Argentina and Brazil in Russia next year, with both engaging in a battle royale for the third place.

It was Argentina who emerged victorious as they completed a thrilling and nerve-shredding 69-67 success to sneak onto the podium.

Victoria Llorente led the way with 23 points and showed the kind of quality which has already seen her appear at the FIBA U19 World Championship for Women and harvest an impressive 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in Lithuania.

It means 10 teams have now booked their spot next year, with USA, Canada, Argentina and Brazil joining hosts Russia and fellow European nations France, Spain, Serbia, Belgium and Netherlands.
