Russia get first win as Round of 16 is set in Udine

UDINE (FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2016) - Russia picked up their first win at the FIBA U16 Women's European Championship 2016 as the opening phase of the competition came to a close.

Having lost both of their opening games, it was a case of third-time lucky as they left Turkey still winless with 11 different scorers contributing in a 67-54 victory. Top spot in Group B went to Italy who beat Lithuania 80-70 as Sara Madera continued her hot streak with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

Germany are still perfect after eventually outlasting Hungary 72-63 as Luisa Geiselsoder posted a smart 15-point shooting performance to ensure pole position in Group A. Spain took second as they overwhelmed Portugal who are still without a win.

Belarus claimed second spot in Group C after an extraordinary line from Kseniya Malashka against Latvia. She showed why she has tasted senior action by registering a mesmerising 23 points, 20 rebounds, 7 steals and 4 blocks in a 61-56 victory. First place went to Czech Republic who exploded in the last quarter to take down Serbia.

Finally in Group D, France march into the Round of 16 with three wins from as many games after leaving struggling Slovak Republic trailing in their wake, while Croatia completed a narrow 53-50 success against Sweden to finish second as Mihaela Lazic and Lucija Kostic shared 30 points.
