Dangerfield ready to get in tune

COLORADO SPRINGS (2015 FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - Crystal Dangerfield is hoping to get in tune with playing on the global stage when she suits up for the USA at the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.

Having just come up short in her quest to make last year's roster for the FIBA U17 Women's World Championship, she is now ready to make her entrance and that is a major tick in the box for the art of perseverance - something derived from her musical talents.

"I get frustrated if I can't play a song on the piano, because I started that when I was really young," revealed the playmaker.

"I learned that not everything works out the way you want it to, but you can't let that discourage you.

"You have to come back, you have to be able to push through it. You have to be able to persevere."

"I do get frustrated on the court too, but I don't show it as much.

Compared to music, it is more visible if you mess up. - Dangerfield

"At the point guard position you are in the spotlight, but like in music, if you can play through it, then it is good."

Of course being able to learn from an esteemed conductor like the legendary Dawn Staley is an added bonus for Dangerfield.

Working with the play-caller is clarifying plenty for the aspiring teenager.

"I have learned that the point guard has to be vocal," said the 17-year-old.

"They have to be the second head coach out there.

"The point guard has to be able to control the team and keep control, making sure they are in the right spots and making sure that defense is good."

Like any good musician, Dangerfield is also eager to bond and learn from her team-mate as she looks to play her part in another sweet-sounding track for the USA, who are aiming for an incredible sixth straight U19 title.

"I am looking forward to being with teammates who have competed in college and some who are about to," she said.

"I am looking forward to learning from them, since they are more experienced - they are older.

"And then the coaching staff, who are college coaches, will help me because I have one more year in high school.

"They will also help me prepare for college."

The USA will compete in Group B with China, Egypt and Spain.
