Iceland end Belarus' win streak, Sweden roll on a 30-0 run

SARAJEVO (FIBA U18 Women's European Championship 2016 Division B) - It is the summer of Iceland, it seems. Much like their U20 men colleagues, Iceland U18 ladies pulled of a surprise and are now just a win away from Division A.

Belarus had entered the Quarter-Finals on a 4-0 record, but it was Iceland who led for most of the game. Their amazing shooting night saw them finish on 59 percent from the two-point range and 46 percent overall, compared to a 37 percent field goal percentage for Belarus.

Iceland ran away with a 25-13 final quarter to celebrate an 85-68 win and a ticket to the Semi-Finals. Emelia Osk Gunnarsdottir had an effective 20 points in 23 minutes of action. Sylvia Run Halfdanardottir finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and six steals, whilst Thelma Dis Agustsdottir and Elin Soley Hrafnkelsdottir also ended in double digits with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Aryna Masko scored 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor for Belarus, but that was not enough to book a date with Greece in the Semis. Iceland already defeated Greece in the Semi-Final of a FIBA Championship this summer, at the 2016 FIBA U20 Men's European Championship Division B.

Greece were on the edge of elimination in their Quarter-Final. Germany were only two points behind heading to the final minute of the game when Elena Tsineke connected on a clutch three-pointer to secure a five-point lead. Greece held on, a 54-48 win was their 5th in a row at the tournament.

Tsineke was the only Greek player in double figures, as she finished with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Johanna Sophie Klug and Leonie Christin Rosemeyer each had 12 points for the German team, who head on to the Classification Games for 5th spot.

Also unbeaten at the Championship are the other two Semi-Finalists. Bosnia and Herzegovina got another monster game from Melisa Brcaninovic in an 81-59 win over Poland. Brcaninovic collected 29 points, 17 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks, Nikolina Zubac helped with 17 points, Gabrijela Viskovic had 13 points and 5 assists.

Bosnia and Herzegovina will play against Sweden in their Semi-Final. A definition of a seesaw battle in the Quarter-Final saw Ireland pull away for a 47-33 lead late in the third quarter, only for Sweden to respond with a massive 30-0 run over the next eight minutes and grab a 63-47 advantage.

Sweden won the game 72-54. Linnea Nilsson was the top scorer with 21 points, Emilia Stocklassa had 16 and 12 rebounds, whilst Klara Lundquist played an all-round game with 15 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals.

In Classification Games for 9th place, Portugal edged out Ukraine 64-59, while three other teams cruised to big wins. Finland defeated Denmark 79-41, England enjoyed a 75-56 win over Bulgaria, and Scotland got routed by Estonia 68-42. Romania defeated Albania 104-36 to avoid the last place in the Championship.
