EuroLeague Women Preview: Thursday 9 February

GYOR (EuroLeague Women) - There are two EuroLeague Women games on Thursday, although it's a place in the EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals which looks to be the main goal for several clubs still struggling to make an impact.

While CMB Cargo Uni Gyor and Mersin only have one victory each in Group A, one of them will double their tally for the season and that could keep their dreams alive of taking sixth spot and a ticket into the last eight of EuroCup Women.

Mersin wrote the headlines last week when they finally took an historic first win in the competition and will be wanting revenge for losing to Gyor on their home floor. They have also been boosted by the addition of Swedish ace Farhiya Abdi who showed her qualities when she netted 20 points in the league last weekend.

Gyor have not won in front of their own home fans all season and now would be a particularly good time to tick that box. However, they need to step up after losing last week 66-47 to Wisla Can-Pack who are only one place above them in the standings.

"Physically we were able to compete with Wisla during the first-half [when the game was tied]," said head coach, Peter Volgyi.

"But then the advantage and superiority of Wisla under the backboard began to show.

"We tried to catch up, but we failed to convert on too many offensive situations and need to be more clinical."

The hosts can expect more difficulties under the hoop against their Turkish visitors who will field the twin towers of Gintare Petronyte and Aneika Henry.

It's a slightly different situation in Group B, where Hatay are not only firmly in the mix for fifth or sixth spot after a dramatic 72-71 success last week at ESBVA-LM, they're also the only team competing on Thursday who still have a slim shot of making the EuroLeague Women Quarter-Finals.

Their prospects will be improved even more if they can see off a CCC Polkowice side who now find themselves cut adrift and with their dreams of extending their participation via EuroCup Women hanging by a thread. Only finishing the Regular Season with three straight wins will keep them in contention.
