Meesseman and Wauters headline Belgium squad
BRUSSELS (FIBA EuroBasket Women 2017) – Belgium will head to FIBA EuroBasket Women for the first time in a decade with frontcourt stars Emma Meesseman and Ann Wauters spearheading their campaign.
A star on both sides of the Atlantic with UMMC Ekaterinburg and Washington Mystics, Meesseman had a stunning run of form in the Qualifiers.
Meanwhile the legendary Wauters played at the 2007 edition and is one of two survivors from that competition in the current list – the other coming in the shape of the experienced and entertaining playmaker Marjorie Carpreaux.
BELGIUM 19-PLAYER ROSTER FOR FIBA EUROBASKET WOMEN
Julie Allemand | Marjorie Carpreaux | Antonia Delaere | Serena-Lynn Geldof |
Sofie Hendrickx | Laura Henket | Kyara Linskens | Jaleesa Maes |
Noemie Mayombo | Emma Meesseman | Hanne Mestdagh | Kim Mestdagh |
Heleen Nauwelaers | Hatty Nawezhi | Sofia Ouahabi | Jana Raman |
Laure Resimont | Julie Vanloo | Ann Wauters |
There will be plenty of firepower on the wings with Kim Mestdagh having been in red-hot shooting form all season for Flammes Carolo Basket, in the French League and in the LFB.
There are also some great options in the backcourt with the likes of WNBA draftee Julie Allemand, Julie Vanloo and Noemie Mayombo – although there is no place for Wisla Can-Pack ace Hind Ben Abedelkader who is undergoing surgery.
Belgium will play Latvia, Montenegro and Russia in Group D.
Before they land in Czech Republic, they also have an extensive preparation program with games lined up against Slovak Republic, Italy, Russia, Hungry, Spain and Netherlands.
