Hungary eager to face class players like Spain's Gasol brothers at FIBA EuroBasket

BUDAPEST (FIBA EuroBasket 2017) - Hungary swept all before them last summer to clinch a spot in FIBA EuroBasket 2017 but success is certain to be much harder to come by in the Final Round.

At the event in Cluj-Napoca, Hungary will face Spain, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Montenegro and hosts Romania in Group C.

Spain, the defending champions, hold a NIKE FIBA World Ranking of No. 2 while Croatia made it to the Quarter-Finals of last summer's Olympics.

The Czech Republic were seventh at FIBA EuroBasket 2015 and Montenegro have an impressive roster that's coached by veteran Bogdan Tanjevic. The Romanians will be making their first FIBA EuroBasket appearance in three decades but as the home team, it will have the benefit of the home crowd.

"The Cluj tournament will be a great experience for us. We'll meet celebrity teams. It's not every day you can play against class players like Pau and Marc Gasol, and we'll go up against the Croatian NBA players, too."Hungary power forward Janos EilingsfeldHungary power forward Janos Eilingsfeld

Nothing will come easy, yet that is not dampening the enthusiasm of the players.

"I'm looking forward to the European Championship," power forward Janos Eilingsfeld said to nemzetisport.hu. "Before the tournament, there is certainly going to be a long, hard preparation. We'll do a lot of traveling and put in a lot work getting game-fit.

Hungary, who beat Great Britain twice, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (MKD) twice and Luxembourg two times in 2016 to seal a place at the FIBA EuroBasket, will open their Group C campaign against Croatia on September 1.
