Permutations: Who will qualify or be eliminated on August 29?

MANILA (Philippines) - There has been no lack of drama at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and we're heading for even more excitement with do-or-die games approaching in Groups A, D, E and H.

Five teams from these groups – Canada, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro – have already booked their tickets to the Second Round on Sunday, while five more have been eliminated from contention for the title.

With the game schedule staggered, we could also see more teams qualifying from Groups B, C, F and G on Monday. For more information, click here

Groups A, D, E and H will be back in action again on Tuesday, August 29 to determine which teams will advance further and which teams will have to settle for Classification Games. 

Here's a look at the situation in these groups ahead of Gameday 3. We've done the math, so you don't have to!

Group A

Dominican Republic

DOM would be eliminated from contention if: 

-DOM lose to ANG by 10 points or more and 
-ITA beat PHI

All other scenarios would qualify Dominican Republic for the Second Round. 

Italy

ITA would be eliminated from contention if: 

-ITA lose to PHI and 
-ANG beat DOM 

OR 

-ITA lose to PHI by 12 points or more and 
-DOM beat ANG 

All other scenarios would qualify Italy for the Second Round. 

Angola

ANG would qualify for the Second Round if: 

-ANG beat DOM and 
-PHI beat ITA 

OR 

-ANG beat DOM by 10 points or more
-ITA beat PHI 

All other scenarios would eliminate Angola from contention. 

Philippines

PHI would qualify for the Second Round if: 

-PHI beat ITA by 12 points or more and 
-DOM beat ANG 

All other scenarios would eliminate the Philippines from contention. 

Group D

The winner of AUS v JPN will will finish second in the group, the loser will be third and out of contention for the title.

Finland are already out of contention for the title.

They are guaranteed to finish fourth in the group.
