Day 2: Iran steal the show while Malaysia and India get second wins

BENGALURU (FIBA U16 Women's Asia Championship 2017) - Day 2 in Division B was highly exciting, especially with the debut of Iran's U16 women's national team together with wins from Malaysia and India.

Malaysia were tested quite well by Kazakhstan, but the SEABA squad eventually came out on top, 64-50. A strong first half gave the Malaysians the cushion they needed as the Kazakhs repeatedly tried to mount rallies in the final two quarters. Yap Siew Hong put up 18 points and 12 rebounds in a powerful display to lead Malaysia, while Liya Umerova was Kazakhstan's best player with 11 points, 5 boards and 2 steals.

By far the biggest newsmaker of the day for Division B was Iran's debut. The West Asia squad's 89-32 victory over Nepal was impressive enough, but the fact that they were even playing was an historic event. This is Iran's first women's national team of any age group to see action in more than 40 years, and they are also the first to play with headgear after FIBA's landmark decision on adopting that rule in May. Rojin Talakoub shone brightly for Iran with 17 points, 4 assists and 3 steals, while Ghazal Maleki added 10 points and 18 rebounds. Nilam Sherpa paced Nepal with 9 points.

Hosts India closed Day 2 action by recording their second win in a row at the expense of fellow SABA team Sri Lanka, 86-58. The Indians led from the opening tip till the final buzzer and served notice again that they were extremely serious of their plans to get promoted to Division A. Monica Jayakumar top-scored for the home team with 19 points, while Puspha Senthil Kumar tossed in 18 points to go along with an eye-popping 19 rebounds. Thisari Hiniduma Kapuge led the way for Sri Lanka with 20 points.
