Venezuela selects team for their final qualifiers push towards AmeriCup 2022

MIAMI (United States) - The Venezuelan Basketball Federation (FVB) and coach Fernando Duró, began to work on the last window of the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 Qualifiers, which will be played from 17 to 22 February in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Cali, Colombia.

FVB summoned 15 players, of which four are abroad, while the rest are in Venezuelan territory. They began to practice on Monday, in the city of Caracas.

Point guard José Sojo and forwards Andrés Marrero and Alí Mata, will have their first experience with the senior team. Marrero, who resides in the United States, recently announced his commitment to NCAA's La Salle University. He will be one of the athletes that will be integrated within the course of the week. Miguel Ruiz and Néstor Colmenares will do the same from Argentina and Michael Carrera from Spain.

"The last window was not easy but we came out with the victories. We will try to be as competitive as possible, again. We want to qualify, we are very close, but we are going to try to add the two wins again," said coach in a statement.

"This time we are going to have more time to work. We are in a period of transition, we are going to mix young people with consecrated people," he added.

Venezuela will play in Group A at Cali, Colombia. On the 21st they will face Colombia and Chile on the 22nd. The Vinotinto sit at the top of Group A with Argentina, each with a 3-1. With a win they will be officially head into AmeriCup 2022.

Taking the pandemic into account, Duró announced that they plan to travel with 14 players to Colombia.
