On the verge of more history: Allemand looking to add to Belgium's record-breaking tournament

LJUBLJANA (Slovenia) - Julie Allemand is no stranger to records on the international stage and the Cats' playmaker stands on the verge of what would be a super and eye-catching Women's EuroBasket high.

LJUBLJANA (Slovenia) - Julie Allemand is no stranger to records on the international stage and the Cats' playmaker stands on the verge of another stellar FIBA Women's EuroBasket achievement.

Pulling the strings for unbeaten Belgium who have wowed everyone with their breathtaking basketball, the guard has lit it up this year's edition with a staggering 11 assists in three of her four outings so far.

This means she is now averaging 10.3. per game and has Nika Baric's all-time average assists record of 8.5 per game in her sights. She would secure her place at the top of the leaderboard with a further 11 assists in the two remaining games in the competition, and tying Baric with 10.

    Rank Player APG Edition
    1 Julie Allemand (BEL)* 10.3 2023
    2  Nika Baric (SLO) 8.5  2019
    3  Jelena Skerovic (MNE) 7.1  2015
    4  Bozica Mujovic (MNE) 7.0  2021
    5  Teja Oblak (SLO) 6.8  2021

*The current placing is for illustrative purposes only as she has two more games to play before her final average is confirmed.

Allemand previously showed her class when she tied the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup game-high assists record with 13 dimes and has already racked up one FIBA Women's EuroBasket record with her exploits.

She has become the first player in the competition's history to hand out double-digit assists in three consecutive games after doing so against Czech Republic,  Italy and Serbia.

"It's easy when your teammates are making everything. I just try to organize everything so that my team can be the best they can on the court," mused Allemand.

"I AM JUST HAPPY FOR EMMA BECAUSE SHE DESERVES HER RECORD AND HISTORY MORE THAN ME," - Julie Allemand

It's easy when you have a shooter like Julie Vanloo, it's easy when you have Emma Meesseman and then against Serbia, we had Kyara Linskens being so strong on the court.

"When it goes like this for me, when you can pass the ball or it opens up and you can drive in the lane, it just makes it all so much easier."

Belgium are on fire - and not just their star guard. Records are being set everywhere.

Earlier in the tournament, the Cats set a new record high 37 assists in a game as they swept aside Israel. Meanwhile, Emma Meesseman put on a show in the Quarter-Finals against Serbia to record the first ever FIBA Women's EuroBasket triple-double in history.

So is Allemand now about to add to the collection with most assists per game in history?

The very question brings a smile to her face - although as evidenced on the court, it's the team that she inevitably puts first: "I am smiling because it is always great when you hear something like that, but right now, I am just happy for Emma because she deserves her record and history more than me."

We feel that this FIBA Women's EuroBasket can be ours. At the last one two years ago, it was more of a lesson for us....

Now we are not scared of anybody - we don't care. We just want to play and win. We will be ready.

"But of course it is great when you can make your own records, but honestly, I just want to win. Also it is not an individual sport, it's a team sport."

When it comes to breaking records, there is only one that is truly important to Allemand and the Cats. Attaining Belgium's best-ever finish by reaching the Final.

"The only record we want to break is the team one," confirmed Allemand.

"We just want to win and we feel that this FIBA Women's EuroBasket can be ours. At the last one two years ago, it was more of a lesson for us.

"Now we are not scared of anybody - we don't care. We just want to play and win. We will be ready," she added.

Allemand and Belgium face France in the Semi Finals on Saturday, June 24.
