    Filipino dribblers rewrite history books

QUEZON CITY (Philippines) - Masterclass performances against newcomers Guam defined the Philippines' clean two-game sweep of their Window 1 assignments in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.

So much so that they actually rewrote the record books. Check out which records they broke or matched in Window 1.

Gilas smashed the all-time Asian Qualifiers record for most rebounds in a game when they hauled down 61 in their 87-46 conquest last Thursday at the Calvo Fieldhouse in Yigo Village.

The charges of Coach Tim Cone shattered the previous mark of 59, which was set by perennial continental contenders Lebanon and Iran one after the other during the 2023 World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Aside from resetting the rebounding mark, the Philippines also tied the Asian Qualifiers record for blocks in a single game by chalking up 10 - a record which they actually set themselves eight years ago.

The Philippines tallied that many swats in their 90-83 home triumph over long-time rivals Chinese Taipei in Quezon City during the 2019 World Cup Asian Qualifiers back in November 27, 2017.

Those 10 blocks in 2017 by the Philippines actually stood as a World Cup Qualifiers record for over 5 years until Victor Wembanyama and Co. recorded 11 blocks in 2023 for France. Gilas (and USA) came close to matching that record, but fell just short.

After reaching those milestones, Gilas would go on to repeat against their Pacific cousins by way of a 90-76 win at the Blue Eagle Gym.

This most recent win also saw the squad reset the record for most free throws made in an Asian Qualifiers game after making 29, eclipsing the 28 set by Lebanon and China, respectively, during the past two editions.
