Jamaica’s towering center, Kofi Cockburn, hit a Tissot Buzzer Beater to give his team a historic win in their Americas Qualifiers debut, defeating Puerto Rico.
Cockburn was a dominant force in the paint, knocking down 12 of 14 shots, including the game-winner. Meanwhile, MarJon Beauchamp made his first appearance for the United States and led his squad to a comfortable victory over Nicaragua. The former NBA player scored 15 of his points in the first quarter and finished 9-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Norchad Omier, despite Nicaragua being unable to withstand the American firepower, continued to shine just as he did in the AmeriCup, once again putting up staggering numbers. The power forward paired his double-double and 6 assists with 3 steals and 1 block. Mexico’s Pako Cruz and Gael Bonilla complete the list of top performers of the day based on efficiency, even though their team also came up short against the Dominican Republic. Cruz drilled 5 of 10 from deep along with five more two-point field goals, while Bonilla knocked down 7 of 11 and showcased his versatility with 2 steals and 2 blocks.
