COLORADO SPRINGS (USA) - One of the most recognizable faces of the women's global game during the past 15 years and a three-time Olympic gold medalist and FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup champion, Tina Charles has announced her retirement.

The 37 year-old started her storied USA career on the international stage at the FIBA U18 Women's AmeriCup. That came four years prior to picking up the first of six senior titles on the global stage and after spending time in the NCAA with the iconic Geno Auriemma and the renowned UConn program.

The first senior success came at the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2010 in Czechia, when USA had to hold off a strong challenge from the host nation to take the famous silverware. Charles posted a super-efficient double-digit scoring return with almost 11 points per outing and 13 points in the Final.

Her Olympic debut came at London 2012, finishing as the second best rebounder for USA and her biggest game coming in the Semi-Finals as she recorded a memorable double-double of 14 points and 10 boards against the Opals.

USA successfully defended their World Cup crown in 2014, with Charles a leading light. Finishing with another double-digit points haul of almost 11 per game, she led the champions in rebounding with 8.3 per game. Her super efficiency 10 points and 8 boards in the Final against Spain, a perfect example of her value to USA over the years.

A second Olympic gold medal came at Rio 2016, with her dominant size, quality and classy decision-making continuing to make her a real nightmare for opponents to defend in the paint.

USA continued reaping the rewards and in 2018 in Tenerife, she completed a hat-trick of FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup titles. Typically influential, her 10.3 points and 7.3 rebounds were a cornerstone of the team's success.

Charles last played for USA at the Tokyo Olympics

Replicating her trio of titles in the World Cup, Charles then completed the feat in the Olympics when she stood on the top step of the podium in Tokyo - showing she still had what it took at the elite level with a memorable 15-point showing in the Group phase against France.

Her other winners' medal came at the Continental level, when she was crowned FIBA Women's AmeriCup Women winner in 2019.

Writing on X, Charles stated: "Fifteen years at the professional level and a lifetime of love for this game. I've experienced the highest highs and lowest lows, and I'm thankful for all of it."

"Through it all, I learned how to show up. When doubt got loud and narratives were written without me, I kept showing up. That's the New Yorker in me, where resilience is built, not talked about. "Growing up in Queens, New York, basketball wasn't just a game, it was a language, a rhythm, it's expression. It pulled me in early, and I gave myself fully to it. It shaped me into the woman I am today and for that, I wouldn't change a thing."

Tina Charles was crowned a EuroCup Women champion

At club level, Charles won EuroCup Women in 2014 with WBC Dynamo, putting up an unstoppable and rare double-double season after racking up 18.9 points and 10.2 boards per outing.

She also played EuroLeague Women for an array of clubs including Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Nadezhda, Wisla Can-Pack and Dynamo Kursk.
