ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire) – IIn just a few weeks, 12 teams from across Africa will board flights to Kigali, Rwanda, for the historic FIBA Africa U16 AfroBasket, which is scheduled for September 2-10, 2025.
This will be the first time Rwanda has hosted the competition, which marks the beginning of Guinea’s defense of the title they won in Monastir, Tunisia, in 2023.
Since the tournament's inception in 2009, Egypt has dominated, winning in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2021. Angola won in 2013, Mali in 2017, and Guinea in 2023, each with one title.
Aside from the defending champions, Guinea, and the host, Rwanda, who have qualified automatically, newcomers Sierra Leone join Côte d’Ivoire, Angola, Cameroon, and Uganda in the mix.
Representative teams from FIBA Africa Zone 1 and 7 are yet to be determined through regional qualifiers.
The Championship winner and runner-up will represent Africa at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in Turkey.
In the last edition, Egypt and Guinea had the privilege of representing Africa, finishing in 12th and 14th place, respectively.
Given the caliber of the teams in the lineup, including debutant Sierra Leone, the battle for supremacy will be intense. Guinea will need to prove that their 2023 win was no fluke, while Egypt and Mali will try to return to their winning ways.
