Two months before the biennial Women's AfroBasket, Egypt signs Julian Martinez.

CAIRO (Egypt) - On Monday, the country's Basketball Federation confirmed that Julian Martinez is the new head coach of Egypt.

Martinez is replacing Amr Elmaraghy, who led Egypt to a second-place finish in the 2025 Women's AfroBasket Qualifiers Zone 5 tournament held at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo in February.

Under Elmaraghy, Egypt was undefeated in four games en route to the final, but fell short in the final, losing 74-63 to Uganda.

Egypt was one of two teams — alongside South Sudan — to benefit from a FIBA Africa wildcard for this year's Women's AfroBasket, which is set to take place in Abidjan from July 26 to August.

Martinez, a Spaniard, isn't new to African basketball, having coached Mozambique at the 2019 Women's AfroBasket in Dakar.

Martinez was at the helm of the women's team of Angolan champions InterClube.

He later coached Rwanda's REG in the 2024 Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) tournament.
