At the heart of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025, the bounce of the ball carried a deeper message—unity, empowerment, and a vision of peace for Africa’s young women.

ABIDJAN (Côte d'Ivoire) – As the top women’s basketball players of Africa converged for the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025, there was more than just a winner’s crown at stake.

The event was also a platform to promote peace.

Thanks to FIBA Foundation’s partnership with international non-profit Peace and Sport, a Mini Basketball clinic was organized for 50 young girls aged 8 to 12 on August 1 at the Palais des Sports.

The session was in collaboration with FIBA’s Regional Office in Africa and the Fédération Ivoirienne de Basket-Ball.

Based on the carefully designed curriculum developed by Peace and Sport, the play-based drills promoted a culture of peace and collaboration.

Two-time Olympian medalist, world champion in Taekwondo, and Peace and Sport's Champion for Peace - Ruth Gbabi, was present to inspire the next generation of Ivorians to fly the flag of unity within their own communities.

Besides Gbabi, Guinea’s national team player Batouly Camara, a familiar name in Africa’s Basketball For Good landscape, too, shared her experiences, skills and knowledge.

Gbabi and Camara serve as shining, living examples of the transformational power of sports in the lives of women in Africa.

"It was such a joy to be part of the session and connect with the girls. I am truly grateful for the opportunity and look forward to supporting more in the future," said Camara.

Ten local coaches also supported the program’s implementation and will be able to propagate the Basketball For Peace approach throughout Abidjan, to create a lasting legacy of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025.

The latest AfroBasket activation built upon similar efforts undertaken during the Women’s Asia Cup in Shenzhen and Women’s AmeriCup in Chile.

Furthermore, all of these Basketball For Good initiatives align with the FIBA Foundation’s broader objective of enhancing the social impact and legacy of FIBA Events, and serve FIBA’s Strategic Priority “Women in Basketball”, to increase female participation globally.
