New Final 8 qualification system to be implemented

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - The FIBA Regional Office-Asia on Wednesday, September 10, has confirmed the teams competing in the Gulf League of the 2025-26 FIBA West Asia Super League (WASL) season.

A total of eight teams will participate, headlined by defending Sub-Zone League champions Shabab Al Ahli of the United Arab Emirates and Ittihad Club of Saudi Arabia - the protagonists of the 2024-25 Gulf Final.

The two are among the returning teams for the pan-regional meet's third edition. Former two-time WASL-Gulf League winners Kuwait Club and Kazma are in the fold again to represent the Kuwaiti Division 1 League.

Al Arabi SC, the reigning Qatari Basketball League champions, are competing for the second straight time, with Muharraq finding their way back into the tilt after ruling the 2024-25 Zain Basketball League of Bahrain.

Al Ula Club and Al Sharjah are entering the festivities as the newcomers, giving Saudi Arabia and UAE, respectively, two representatives each in the club competition fully owned and operated by FIBA.

The 2025-26 season has been confirmed to tip off on October 13, marking the start of what should become an even more interesting race to the Final 8 as the qualification process underwent a significant change.

From six in past editions, seven teams from WASL will now make it to the league's culminating event, with the teams finishing fourth to vie for the right to join the podium finishers of their respective Sub-Zone Leagues.

The remaining ticket belongs to the SABA champions.

Details about the WASL-West Asia League, particularly which ball clubs are confirmed to join, as well as the season's complete schedule and rosters will be communicated at a later date.
