Hagåtña (Guam) - The Federated States of Micronesia opened their 2026 FIBA Women's Micronesian Cup campaign with a composed and confident performance against Palau.
Showing clear growth from their last appearance in 2022, where the team once struggled with consistency and depth, this year’s group arrived with a stronger identity, better conditioning, and a steadier mix of experience and emerging talent.
The tone was set early by veteran guard Mermy Yamada, whose poise and leadership anchored the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) throughout the match. Her ability to organise the offence, settle the team under pressure, and lift the energy of younger teammates was evident from the opening minutes. Yamada’s presence has become a defining feature of FSM’s evolution, and her influence was felt in every phase of the game.

"There’s still improvement we need to make with our communication and boxing out, but overall everyone did what they had to do to secure the win tonight,” Yamada said.
FSM’s improvement since 2022 is striking. Four years ago, the team averaged just 36 points per game and relied heavily on a small core of contributors like Jilda Lemangmai and Erwine Takasy. In contrast, the 2026 roster plays with greater balance and confidence. Players such as Sylvania Amor and Arlinda Panuelo brought physicality and defensive commitment, while younger athletes including Esther Edward, Diva Ekiek and Chantyel Ekiek injected pace, pressure and fresh scoring options.
My favourite part was the connection between me and Sylvania. She found me with great passes and I was able to find her too.
"Leila shot the ball well, and honestly the whole team stepped up," Yamada said. "I’m proud of everyone.”
Their collective impact allowed FSM to maintain control even as Palau pushed back with transition attempts and individual scoring bursts.
Palau showed determination throughout the contest, particularly through their guard activity and willingness to attack in the open floor. Their young roster competed hard and generated moments of momentum, but FSM’s structure and discipline ultimately kept the game in their hands. Once the FSM rotation settled into its rhythm, the team’s ball movement and defensive communication created separation that Palau struggled to close.
The match reflects a meaningful step forward for FSM. The blend of veteran steadiness and youthful energy has reshaped the team’s identity, and the win over Palau signals a more competitive and connected campaign than the one seen in 2022. With the women from Guam awaiting them tomorrow, FSM leave the opening game with confidence, cohesion and a clear sense of direction.
The top two placed teams in the women's competitions will qualify for the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti with the top placed men's team also qualifying. The FIBA Micronesian Cup and FIBA Women's Micronesian Cup tips‑off on August 14, with all games to be played at University of Guam Calvo Field House.
