NEW YORK (USA) - The FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 received a high-profile mention on the global stage as the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, highlighted FIBA's flagship national team event during his address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Referring to Qatar's hosting of the tournament, His Highness said: "Qatar will host the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, reflecting its belief in the power of sport to build bridges of communication and bring people closer together."
The reference comes as anticipation continues to build for what will be one of the biggest sporting events ever staged in Qatar. From 27 August to 12 September 2027, Doha will welcome the world's top basketball nations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, with 32 teams competing for the prestigious Naismith Trophy.

With four competition venues located within approximately 30 minutes of one another, fans will be able to easily follow their favourite teams and experience multiple games throughout the tournament.
Doha's extensive international flight connections and integrated public transportation network will further facilitate travel for fans from around the world, while offering visitors the opportunity to combine the basketball action with Qatar's culture, hospitality, attractions, and wider visitor experiences.
