MIAMI (United States) – The FIBA Regional Office in the Americas has confirmed the five teams that will participate in the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2027 South American Qualifiers, set to take place from October 21-25 in Castro, Chile. Host nation Chile will be joined by Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela in a tournament that marks a new chapter in FIBA Americas' youth competition system, introduced this year to strengthen the development of youth basketball across the region. The competition will be played under a single round-robin format, with all five teams competing in one group. Each national team will face every other team once, and the squad that finishes atop the standings will earn a direct berth to the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2027. A second berth may be awarded depending on the designation of the host nation for the continental tournament, which will be announced at a later date. This qualifier replaces the former FIBA South American U15 Championship and is part of FIBA's new qualification model for youth competitions in the Americas. As part of this new system, Argentina and Brazil will not participate in the qualifier, having already secured direct qualification to the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2027 by finishing as the top two South American nations in the historical U16 category rankings, effective January 1, 2026. The winners of the South American Qualifiers will join Argentina and Brazil as South America's representatives at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2027.
