BUENOS AIRES (FIBA U19 Women's World Championship) - Hernan Amaya is thrilled to have been able to get his initial preparations with Argentina underway ahead of the FIBA U19 Women's World Championship.
Having held the reins at the last edition of the tournament, the head coach of the South American nation is ready to try and make an impact and getting his players together early could be the key.
Therefore it wasn't surprising that he paid tribute to the women's clubs in Argentina for throwing their weight behind the week-long camp currently underway and sustaining a break in action to facilitate it.
It's really great to prepare within the format of the Super League - Amaya
"It makes me very happy to see the willingness of the clubs," said the play-caller, whose team has been drawn in Group A, along with Netherlands, Chinese Taipei and the host nation.
"They have demonstrated the value they place on the national team through the possibility they have given us to have their players represent their country and in allowing us to prepare with the responsibility deserved," added Amaya.
A total of 20 players have been named on the initial roster for the tournament and they are all involved in the preparation camp, which is being held at the Centro Nacional de Alto Rendimiento Deportivo (CeNARD).
Amaya and his assistant coaches Leonardo Costa and Laura Cors are also working with one of the most highly-rated young players in the country after Lucia Operto, a 13-year-old was invited to participate and undertake some individual work alongside the main candidates.
She is a name to look out for in the future, but the contingent from Russia will be led by star forward Victoria Lllorente and swingman Magali Armesto, who both stepped out in Klaipeda two years ago at the event when Argentina won two of their six matches in Lithuania.
