South Korea headline 5 unbeaten teams after Day 2 at FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup Qualifying Draw

CHANGPING (FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup) – South Korea's men, the 2 Australian and the 2 Uzbekistani teams remain undefeated after 2 days of competition at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup Qualifying Draw in Changping, China.

CHANGPING (FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup) – South Korea's men, the 2 Australian and the 2 Uzbekistani teams remain undefeated after 2 days of competition at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup Qualifying Draw in Changping, China.

The women made their debut at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup on Saturday and just 2 teams had back-to-back wins.

The reigning champs Australia started with a bang in Pool B: Instagram power user Rebecca Cole (9 pts) led the team to a 21-11 win against Thailand and her teammate Madeleine Garrick caught fire against Sri Lanka with 4 two-pointers on her way to 12 points against Sri Lanka in a 21-2 landslide. Australia are just one win against Samao away from a ticket to the Main Draw.

In Pool A, Uzbekistan continued to surprise, this time with the women. The towering Aliya Samatova (6ft 4in, 1.94m) was a problem for both Vanuatu (20-9) and Mongolia (17-16). The 23-year-old tallied 20 points overall and topped all scorers in the women's category. If they beat Hong Kong tomorrow, Uzbekistan will automatically advance to the Main Draw.

With 5 undefeated teams to start the day, the men's side was ready for some changes.

We spoke of Uzbekistan's women before. Well the men were equally as inspired and moved to a 4-0 record after 2 days thanks to 2 more wins, against Vanuatu (21-3) and Sri Lanka (21-8). The dynamic duo of Alexandr Kozlov (6th in scoring, by far 1st in free throws made) and sharpshooter Emir Azizov (8th in scoring, 3rd in 2-pointers made) is doing damage in Changping.

South Korea continued their perfect run (now 4-0 too). Event scoring leader Min Seob Kim nailed 5 shots from behind the arc in a 21-10 against Thailand. His teammate Minsu Park took over (9 pts) in a 21-14 success over Malaysia.

South Korea and Uzbekistan are guaranteed to finish in the Top 2 in Pool A. The winner of their showdown tomorrow will get a direct ticket to the Main Draw. The other will get a second chance in a play-off against the team ranked 2nd in Pool B.

Many had booked Iran vs Australia to be the game of the day in Pol B but the Australians started the game on a 10-1 run, that became a 16-2 run. Iran never recovered their disastrous start and lost 21-7, without a single make from behind the arc. This is where Australia made their bread and butter. Andrew Steel had 4 two-pointers in the game and a game-high 9 points. The 27-year-old ranks 2nd in scoring with 33 points in 4 games. A victory against Samoa would guarantee their ticket to the Main Draw.

Iran's hopes are not over. Basketball star Mohammad Jamshidi had 12 points in a 21-12 win against Indonesia and Ws against Hong Kong and Samoa tomorrow could mean a play-off game against South Korea or Uzbekistan for a place in the Main Draw.

Last but not least, we had left 21-year-old Jonathan Galloway on the wrong side of a poster yesterday. The Guam big man had his own highlight reel today in a 21-14 win against Hong Kong.
