ORADEA (Romania) - The Group Phase of FIBA U16 EuroBasket is in the books, and there has been no shortage of surprises during the first three days of competition.
Among them have been the ascendance of Latvia, behind stellar play from rising star Benjamin Berrouet; the reigning champions Serbia dropping all three of their games; and the emergence of Romania's Sebastian-Petru Lapuste as one of the best players in his age group.
As teams get ready for their Round of 16 matchups, we highlight 10 players who have made the biggest impact during the Group Phase and could shape the defining stages of the tournament in Oradea.
Benjamin Berrouet - Latvia
Forward
Birth Date: June 10, 2010 (16 years old) Height: 2.03m (6ft 8in) Tournament Stats: 27.7 PPG, 16.3 RPG, 4.0 APG, 2.7 BPG
Berrouet entered the tournament with a tremendous amount of hype, both due to his performance in last year's U16 EuroBasket and his pedigree as a five-star recruit in the high school class of 2028. In his three Group Phase games, the 16-year-old has managed to even surpass expectations. Berrouet is leading the tournament in scoring and rebounding, is second in blocks per game, and delivered a masterful performance with 33 points and 22 rebounds against Czechia.
With his ability to dominate the paint on both ends of the floor, Berrouet has Latvia sitting at a perfect record entering the Round of 16, making the team's dream of winning their first-ever U16 title look more attainable with each passing game.
Sebastian-Petru Lapuste - Romania
Guard
Birth Date: September 5, 2010 (15 years old) Height: 1.91m (6ft 3in) Tournament Stats: 25.0 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 8.3 APG, 6.7 SPG, 1.0 BPG
Lapuste has been one of the most statistically dominant players in Oradea, leading the competition in assists and steals per game while also ranking second in scoring and third in rebounding. The 15-year-old has also provided some of the most electric moments of the tournament, hitting the game-winning jump shot against Serbia on Saturday and following that up with a 34-point, 10-rebound, 10-steal, 8-assist game against Lithuania - making him only the fifth player to record a triple-double in U16 EuroBasket history.
As Romania head into the Round of 16, they will need more Lapuste magic in what will be a tough matchup against a very well-balanced Türkiye team.
Kuzey Baysal - Türkiye
Point Guard
Birth Date: May 03, 2010 (16 years old) Height: 1.81m (5ft 11in) Tournament Stats: 14.0 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 6.3 APG, 2.0 SPG
Baysal's advanced playmaking ability has him ranking third in assists per game in the tournament, while also making him an invaluable piece for Türkiye, as his game is a perfect complement to Yigit Mehmet Okur's shooting and Arda Ozturk's interior scoring. The 16-year-old is, however, more than just a passer and has been able to take over games, as shown by his 21-point, 7-assist, 5-rebound, 5-steal performance against Italy, in which he also shot 10-for-13 from the field.
Türkiye will face the host nation in the Round of 16, but with Baysal as the leader of a talented squad, they have a major chance to win their first U16 title since 2012.
Roman Kolka - Slovenia
Small Forward

Slovenia recovered quickly from a 25-point loss in their debut against France, advancing in second place in Group D. The main reason behind Slovenia's resurgence has been Kolka, who ranks in the top 10 in points, rebounds, and blocks and is leading his team in every statistical category.
Kolka's versatility and two-way impact have been key for Slovenia as they finished second in Group D with a 2-1 record. They are definitely one of the teams to watch in Oradea as they head into a Round of 16 matchup with Greece.
Alex Pietrzak - Poland
Point Guard

Poland is having a successful return to Division A, having gone 2-1 in the Group Phase, including an upset win over defending champions Serbia. One of the keys to Poland's Group Phase campaign has been Pietrzak, who is leading his team in scoring and has averaged 4.7 steals per game - the second-best mark in the entire tournament.
Poland will head into a Round of 16 matchup against Czechia. Should they win, they would not only reach their goal of avoiding relegation, but also secure their first top-eight finish since 2012.
Danielius Jasikevicius - Lithuania
Point Guard
Birth Date: January 27, 2010 (16 years old) Height: 1.80m (5ft 11in) Tournament Stats: 15.7 PPG, 8.0 APG, 4.7 RPG, 3.7 SPG
Much has been said about Jasikevicius' lineage, as he's the nephew of legendary player and coach Sarunas Jasikevicius. However, more should be said about his performance in Oradea, as he's ranking second in assists and fourth in steals per game while also proving to be a threat from three-point range.
With Jasikevicius' advanced passing and shot-making abilities, Lithuania is undefeated and should be considered a candidate to win it all in Oradea.
Matej Snobl - Czechia
Point Guard
Birth Date: February 03, 2011 (15 years old) Height: 1.86m (6ft 1in) Tournament Stats: 16.7 PPG, 4.3 APG, 2.3 RPG, 1.0 SPG
Despite playing one year up, Snobl has emerged as one of the best shooters in Oradea, as he's shooting 52.4 percent from three on 7 attempts per game. Czechia has shown massive potential in their first year back in Division A, including a 33-point win over perennial contenders Italy in which Snobl went for 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
If the 15-year-old continues playing at this level, it wouldn't be a shock if Czechia avoid relegation, which would be a massive feat for a team that hadn't played in Division A since 2012.
Taïg Nonga Drieux - France
Center
Birth Date: August 19, 2010 (15 years old) Height: 2.03m (6ft 8in) Tournament Stats: 14.0 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 2.3 SPG, 1.0 APG
France has had a dominant Group Phase, winning all three games by an average of 26 points while keeping all opponents under 70 points. On a roster with no clear statistical standout, Nonga Drieux has been one of the most productive players, making an impact on defense with his rebounding and his ability to generate turnovers while also being an efficient finisher in the paint.
France is on a stellar run at the U16 level, having reached the Semi-Finals in six of the last seven tournaments. With a deep roster and Nonga Drieux as one of their main contributors, the team is once again looking like a favorite to win it all in Oradea.
Ryan Vincent - Spain
Center

Spain is firing on all cylinders: they're undefeated and looking like one of the top candidates to win it all in Oradea as they head into the Round of 16. On a balanced roster, one of the standouts has been Vincent, who has emerged as one of the tournament's top rim protectors and a tremendously efficient interior finisher, shooting 82.4 percent from the field.
Vincent's size, defensive productivity, and efficient interior finishing have given Spain a massive advantage in the paint on both ends of the floor, one that could carry them all the way to a title in Oradea.
Maor Sela - Israel
Center

Sela ranks in the top 10 for blocks, is leading his team in rebounding, and is also shooting 41.7 percent from three-point range, showcasing a unique combination of size, rim protection, and floor-spacing ability among players in this tournament. The 15-year-old's impact on multiple levels of the floor has been a major factor for Israel and was especially important in their win against Greece, where Sela went for 20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 blocks.
Israel will head into a Round of 16 matchup with Germany, but based on what they showcased in the Group Phase, they should certainly improve on their 13th-place finish from last year's tournament.
