United States soars to Semi-Finals after win over Dominican Republic

    Game Report

The U.S. is the first team to secure qualification for next year's FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournaments.

SANTIAGO (Chile) – United States continued its undefeated run in the 2025 edition of the Women's AmeriCup as the team defeated the Dominican Republic 110-44 on Friday at Centro de Deportes Colectivos. Six different U.S. players finished in double digits as they secured a 66-point win in the Women's AmeriCup Quarter-Finals. The 66-point differential is the third-largest point differential for the USA in an AmeriCup game, and is the 14th time the USA has scored 100+ points in an AmeriCup.

    Turning point

The two teams swapped leads three times in the first quarter before the United States took control, which it held until the final whistle, coming off a 19-0 run that helped secure a cushion with the score 30-11. The United States also turned the game on turnovers, its 31 steals against the Dominican Republic today are the most by any country in AmeriCup history (since 2003). The previous high was 24.

    Player of the game

    Flau’jae Johnson

Flau’jae Johnson led the United States with 22 points, the second-highest by a USA player in the AmeriCup. The career high by a USA player is Diamond DeShields' 25 in 2019 against Paraguay. Johnson shot 8-of-12 from the field, good for 66.67 percent, and grabbed 7 rebounds and 4 steals in the win.

    Stats don’t lie

United States led in multiple categories, but its defense forced 40 turnovers from Dominican Republic, the most in AmeriCup history (the previous record was 34, on three occasions). On top of defense, United States committed only 13 personal fouls compared to the Dominican Republic's 22, and dominated on the boards, grabbing 57 rebounds compared to its opponent's 32.

    Bottom line

United States, which has won the AmeriCup four times, has been highly touted as favorites to win the 2025 edition and showcased all-around play with the win over Dominican Republic. They will play the winner of Canada vs. Colombia.

    They said

Johnson is continuing to build her overall game in Chile during her first AmeriCup appearance. "These international players are definitely skilled, they play hard... it's physical, that would be my number one takeaway," said Flau'jae Johnson in an interview with FIBA Americas. U.S. player Olivia Miles is currently in the top three in the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup fan poll due to her performance throughout the Group Phase. It makes me feel appreciative because that means people are loving my game and it is bringing them joy in some way,” said Miles. “The more I play, the more I come up against great teams, pro players, whatever it may be, I get the opportunity to grow.”
