SANTIAGO (Chile) – Bouncing back off a loss, Canada closed out the Group Phase of the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2025 with a win over Dominican Republic on Wednesday evening. The team’s 82-46 win secured them second place in Group A. It was the ninth win for Canada against the Dominican Republic in nine games played in the Women’s AmeriCup. The average point difference in those wins is 46.1 points.
Turning point
Despite the final score being a gap of over 30 points, the Dominican Republic held the lead in the first quarter before Canada went on a 25-0 run to not only claim the lead back, but lead by at least 20 points. Three different Canadian players finished the game in double-digits, while six players tallied at least seven or more points in the win.
Player of the game
Delaney Gibb led Canada with 21 points, including sinking 4 three-pointers and shooting 66.7 percent from beyond the arc. She also tallied six rebounds for Canada in the win.
Kayla Alexander also recorded another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, her tenth in 23 AmeriCup games and her second in this edition. With her 11 rebounds, she now has 211, placing her second on the rebounding list in AmeriCup (since 2003), passing fellow Canadian Kim Gaucher.
Stats don’t lie
Canada's bench scored more than half of its points, scoring 51, and defensively held Dominican Republic's rotation to just 15 points, forcing their starters to carry the load. The Canadians also continued to win the turnover battle, forcing Dominican Republic into 15 turnovers that resulted in 16 points for them, while Canada committed 16 turnovers themselves, they only allowed two points off the mistakes.
Bottom line
Canada's play on the glass made the difference, its 68 rebounds against the Dominican Republic made the third-highest total in AmeriCup history since 2023. The team will now finish second in its group behind only Brazil, which secured a perfect record.
They said
"We played hard, which is really important, we did a good job at getting rebounds, and then the pace of the ball. That's where the team found success and I found success tonight… it's a fun way to play," said Gibb.
