    EXPLAINER: 2025 Women's AfroBasket Draw

    We bring you everything you need to know about the 2025 Women's AfroBasket Draw.

    ABIDJAN (Cote d’Ivoire) – Here is an explanation of the draw for the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket.

    The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hotel des armées in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

    The biennial Women's AfroBasket has been held in four different countries (Cameroon, Mali, Senegal and Rwanda) over the past decade, and Côte d'Ivoire will host the event for the first time.

    The twelve-nation African championship will be held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan from July 26 to August 3.

    How the teams qualified:

    While Côte d'Ivoire qualified for the 2025 Women's AfroBasket as the host country, Nigeria secured automatic qualification by winning the 2023 edition of the tournament.

    The other three semi-finalists of the 2023 edition, Senegal (runner-up), Mali (third) and Rwanda (fourth), also qualified automatically for this year's edition.

    Guinea (Zone 2), Cameroon (Zone 4), Uganda (Zone 5) and Angola (Zone 6) all qualified for the Ivory Coast tournament by winning their respective FIBA Africa Zone qualifiers.

    The qualifiers started in August 2024 with Zone 4 and ended in February 2025 with Zone 5.

    Wild Cards

    Wild Cards FIBA Africa awarded wild cards to Egypt, Mozambique and South Sudan.

    Competition System:

    - The twelve teams will be divided into four groups (A, B, C and D) of three teams each.

    - Each team will play the other teams in their group for a total of two games per team.

    - The winners of each group automatically qualify for the quarter-finals.

    - The second and third placed teams in each group will play a qualifying series for the quarter finals with the winners advancing to the last eight.

    - The four losing teams in the quarter-finals Qualifier Series will be seeded according to the results of their games (9th-12th).

    - The quarter-finals will be played between the four group winners and the winners of the quarter-finals qualifiers.

    - The winners of the quarter-finals will advance to the semi-finals, while the four losing teams will play the Classification Round games for 5th to 8th place.

    - The winners of the semi-finals will advance to the Final to determine the 2025 Women's AfroBasket Champion, while the losing semi-final teams will compete for the third and fourth place.

    How the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket Draw works:

    - All 12 teams will be placed in three different pots (1, 2 and 3) and a fourth pot will determine each team's position in their respective groups.

    - POT 1 - Côte d'Ivoire (hosts), Nigeria (reigning champions), Senegal (2023 runners-up) and Mali (2023 runners-up).

    - POT 2 - Zone 5 teams: Egypt, Rwanda, South Sudan and Uganda.

    - POT 3 - Angola, Cameroon, Guinea and Mozambique.

    Pot for Group Positioning:

    - Pot A will determine positions 2 and 3 in Group A.

    - Pot B will determine positions 2 and 3 in Group B.

    - Pot C will determine positions 2 and 3 in Group C.

    - Pot D will determine positions 2 and 3 in Group D.
