LEON (Mexico) – The United States and Canada became the first teams to qualify for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027 after securing a spot in the Semi-Finals of the FIBA U18 AmeriCup 2026. With victories over Brazil and Puerto Rico, respectively, both teams completed the Group Phase undefeated (3-0), finished atop their groups, and earned direct berths to the Semi-Finals. As a result, they secured two of the four available berths to the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2027 under the new competition format introduced during this edition of the FIBA U18 AmeriCup.
The new competition format is as follows:
The first-place team in each group advances directly to the Semi-Finals
The fourth-place teams move on to the classification games for 5th through 8th place
The second- and third-place teams cross over in the Quarter-Finals (2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A)
The Quarter-Final winners advance to the Semi-Finals alongside the group winners
The four Semi-Finalists automatically qualify for the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup
Quarter-Final matchups set
With the Group Phase complete, Friday’s Quarterfinal matchups are now set.
In one of the matchups, Argentina (2A) will face Puerto Rico (3B). In the other, the Dominican Republic (2B) will take on Brazil (3A). The winners will advance to the Semi-Finals to face the group leaders and will claim the remaining two berths to the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in 2027. Check the schedule here.
