ZARAGOZA (Spain) - Portugal produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers; stunning two-time champions Spain with an impressive 95-89 victory in Zaragoza.
Playing in front of a packed home crowd, Portugal refused to be intimidated and secured their first-ever competitive victory over Spain, as Travante Williams led the charge with 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting.
The visitors showed composure and determination throughout the game, maintaining their intensity against one of Europe’s leading sides. Spain struggled to find their rhythm as Portugal capitalized on chances and kept the pressure on, before hanging on in the final minute.
Neemias Queta also made a valuable contribution for Portugal, narrowly missing out on a double-double after finishing with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
His presence inside helped Portugal compete physically and provided another important element to their outstanding team performance.
The victory could prove significant in Portugal’s qualification campaign - taking them to 4-3 in Group I, whilst handing Spain their second loss of the Qualifiers as they fall to 5-2.
