Germany outlast Croatia in OT epic as both teams advance; Israel qualify with win over Cyprus
Germany came from behind to beat Croatia 91-89 after a period of overtime in a thrilling rollercoaster battle in Bonn.
Johannes Thiemann had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Germany to a slender victory. Mario Hezonja led all scorers with 30 for Croatia, with Jaleen Smith adding 12 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists on 5-for-5 shooting in defeat.
Israel have secured their place into the Second Round with a comfortable 83-54 win over Cyprus in Group E.
In a balanced scoring effort, Adam Ariel, Roman Sorkin and Idan Zalmanson all had 13 points as the Israelis hit 10 triples. Filippos Tigkas had a game-high 15 for Cyprus.
Finland and France advance to Second Round with wins
Finland had to work hard but eventually got the better of Belgium 78-75 to clinch their place in the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifiers.
Olivier Nkamhoua bagged 23 points on 7-for-11 shooting to pace Finland. Loic Schwartz had 19 in response for Belgium, who remain without a win in four.
After needing a buzzer-beater in their opening encounter, France didn't need that this time around as they beat Hungary 98-79 to also advance.
Amine Noua led four French players in double figures with 21 points. Zoltan Perl amassed 18 for the Hungarians.
Poland progress to Second Round; Austria breathe new life into Qualifiers campaign
Poland were in scorching form as they beat Latvia 92-72 to walk on to the Second Round of the Qualifiers.
Jordan Loyd once again put the Latvians to the sword, scoring 21 points and grabbing 6 rebounds to lead Poland. Arturs Strautins had 20 to pace Latvia, which slumped to two losses in this window.
Timo Lanmuller buried a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to break the hearts of the Netherlands with an 88-87 win.
Fynn Schott bagged another double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead Austria, but Lanmuller's clutch triple gave them hope with their first win. Yannick Franke and Keye van der Vuurst had 17 points apiece to lead the Dutch, who missed out on the chance to seal qualification to the Second Round.
Slovenia escape with win in Czechia; Sweden score vital victory
Slovenia bounced back from a poor first half and needed free throws from veteran Klemen Prepelic with 14 seconds left to edge Czechia 86-84.
Prepelic had 20 points for the victors with Ziga Samar playing his supporting role with 15. Tomas Kyzlink led Czechia with 22.
Sweden ruined Estonia's plans to qualify for the Second Round on home court with a professional 79-69 victory in Group H.
Ludde Hakanson drilled four three-pointers on his way to 18 points for the Swedes, who got their first win of the Qualifiers. Henri Drell responded with 16 for the hosts in a disappointing evening for them.
