MIAMI (United States) - Window 4 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifiers marks another critical step in the road to Doha, Qatar. Twelve teams remain, as contests on August 27 and 31 mark the beginning of the Second Round. The squads are set to compete for one of seven spots from the Americas region to advance. After the field was narrowed to 12 teams, competition only gets tougher from this point forward. Each national team will have to be at their best to keep their hopes of appearing at the World Cup next summer alive. Here are five games in Window 4 that you won’t want to miss.
Argentina vs. Puerto Rico - Group F
August 27 - Local Time: 7:10 p.m. (GMT-3) Polideportivo Islas Malvinas, Mar del Plata (ARG) Argentina and Puerto Rico enter the Second Round in entirely different positions. The South Americans have put themselves in an excellent position to return to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, racking up a 5-1 record in the First Round. The 2019 runner-ups shockingly missed the 2023 edition, but they seem likely to return to the pinnacle of international basketball. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico enters the Second Round after finishing third in Group B with a 2-4 record after a pair of surprising losses to Jamaica in the First Round. The Caribbeans have not missed a World Cup since 1982, so a win to open the Second Round would be key to staying afloat. Argentina has won five of their past six matchups against Puerto Rico dating back to 2014, including an 82-77 victory in the quarter-finals of last year’s AmeriCup.
Brazil vs. Dominican Republic - Group E
August 27 - Local Time: 8:10 p.m. (GMT-3) Ginasio Nilson Nelson, Brasilia (BRA) In the most marquee matchup of Group E during this window, 6-0 Brazil takes on the 4-2 Dominican Republic. Brazil, the AmeriCup 2025 champions, swept through Group C, defeating Colombia, Chile, and Venezuela twice each by an average margin of 18.3 points. They look to continue their winning streak at home against the Dominican Republic. The Carribeans had a strong first round, highlighted by an 87-79 upset victory over the United States, the top-ranked team in the FIBA World Rankings, presented by Nike. In their other contest against USA, they lost by just one point, so the team is certainly capable of handing Brazil their first possible loss. The Dominican Republic is 2-14 all-time against Brazil and will be seeking their first victory over the South Americans since the FIBA AmeriCup 2011. The teams last faced off in the quarter-finals of the AmeriCup in 2025, with Brazil reigning supreme.
Uruguay vs. Bahamas - Group F
August 27 - Local Time: 8:10 p.m. (GMT-3) Antel Arena, Montevideo (URU)
To the surprise of many, Uruguay finished atop Group D with a 5-1 record in the First Round. They’ve been led by First Round MVP Joaquin Rodriguez, who was key in the team’s 61-44 victory over Argentina in Window 2. Now, Uruguay is eyeing their first World Cup appearance since 1986. On the flip side, the Bahamas is hoping to make their first-ever appearance in the World Cup. However, the Caribbeans have just a 2-4 record and will need to string together some wins to move up the standings of Group F. During Window 3, NBA stars VJ Edgecombe and Buddy Hield suited up for the Bahamas. The two national teams have faced off just three times before, with two of those matchups occurring since 2023. Although the Bahamas defeated Uruguay in the Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2023, Uruguay got revenge last summer at the AmeriCup.
Canada vs. Argentina - Group F
August 31 - Local Time: 7:10 p.m. (GMT-4) Videotron Centre, Quebec (CAN) Perhaps the premier game of Window 4, Canada will take on Argentina in a matchup of two top 10 ranked teams in the FIBA World Rankings, presented by Nike. Canada has been the most dominant team in these qualifiers, posting a perfect 6-0 record in the First Round with two wins each over Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and Jamaica. The Canadians won each game by an average margin of 22.2 points. In this window, the Canadians are expected to feature multiple NBA stars, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Andrew Nembhard, Dillon Brooks and more. Meanwhile, Argentina will take on their toughest test yet. If they go 2-0 during Window 4 to improve to 7-1, there is a chance that they enter Window 5 atop Group F. Since 2000, Argentina has won 13 of the 14 matchups against Canada. The North Americans’ lone victory came in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers.
Mexico vs. Brazil - Group E
August 31 - Local Time: 8:10 p.m. (GMT-6) Gimnasio Marcelino González, Zacatecas (MEX) The final contest of the window should ensure that Window 4 concludes with a quality matchup. With a 3-3 record and sitting at fourth in Group E, Mexico is currently on the brink of advancing to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027. They have not reached consecutive World Cups since 1963 and 1967. To do so, they’ll need to pick up some big wins over a team like Brazil. Brazil will look to close Window 4 on a high note to add a seventh or eighth win to their record. The undefeated South Americans have never missed a FIBA Basketball World Cup and are only one of two countries, along with the United States, to play in every single edition of the tournament since it began. In the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers, Brazil and Mexico split their head-to-head matchups. The teams have split their last 10 matchups 5-5 apiece, so this could go either team’s way, especially with a rowdy Mexican crowd.
