Goran Lojo's Uganda will face their first test in Egypt in February.

KAMPALA (Uganda) - The Bosnian Goran Lojo has been confirmed as the new head coach of Uganda by the country's Basketball Federation (FUBA) on Tuesday.

The 49-year-old replaces American Georges Galanopoulos, who coached the Silverbacks in the last three AfroBasket editions in 2017, 2019 and 2021.

According to FUBA, Lojo previously worked with the Ugandan women's national team.

One of Lojo's most successful coaching jobs was leading his native Bosnia & Herzegovina to fifth place in the 2021 Women's EuroBasket.

FUBA described Goran Lojo as "An experienced international coach from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lojo brings a strong background in national teams, elite club basketball and youth development across Europe.

"His appointment reflects FUBA’s commitment to strengthening the competitiveness and global profile of Ugandan basketball."

Under Goran Lojo, Bosnia & Herzegovina finished bottom in the 12-nation 2022 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Australia.

Uganda will open their qualifying campaign for the 2027 World Cup in Cairo in February, taking on Group D opponents Angola, Egypt and Mali.

Four months ago, Uganda finished 15th in the AfroBasket tournament, which was described as a decline compared to their sixth-place finish in the 2021 edition.

In the Angolan capital, they lost all three of their games against Egypt, Mali and Senegal.
