MANAGUA (Nicaragua) – Since its creation in 1980, the FIBA AmeriCup has showcased the elite talent of the Americas. The 20th edition, tipping off on August 22 in Nicaragua, continues that tradition with several players under NBA contracts for the 2025-26 season. Their presence boosts both the level and prestige of the competition while reaffirming the AmeriCup’s standing as the premier national team tournament in the Americas. At the last AmeriCup in 2022, just two players under NBA contracts participated: Canadian Dalano Banton and American Anthony Lamb. This year, that number has doubled to four. Here’s a look at the stars:
Leonard Miller – Canada
Born: November 26, 2003 (21 years old) Height: 2.08 m / 6’10” Position: Power Forward Team: Minnesota Timberwolves Miller has seen limited playing time in two seasons with the Timberwolves, but his athleticism and size give him a considerable upside. Minnesota has been patient with his development due to his youth. But this coming season, he will aim to secure a regular spot in the rotation. This will be his first appearance with the senior national team, though he previously represented Canada at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup in 2019.
David Jones-García – Dominican Republic
Born: November 24, 2001 (23 years old) Height: 1.98 m / 6’6” Position: Shooting Guard / Small Forward Team: San Antonio Spurs Jones-García turned heads at the recent NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, averaging 24.3 points per game on a 63 percent from three-point range, along with 5.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.7 steals. That performance earned him a two-way contract with the Spurs. His presence at the AmeriCup is one of the reasons why the Dominican Republic is considered a strong candidate to contend for a podium finish.
Kyshawn George – Canada
Born: December 12, 2003 (21 years old) Height: 2.01 m / 6’7” Position: Small Forward Team: Washington Wizards George impressed as a rookie with Washington and, despite his age, is expected to be a key piece for Canada at the AmeriCup thanks to his versatility on both ends of the court.
