Players to watch out for at FIBA AmeriCup 2025

    Preview

These are some of the standout players who could propel their teams in the tournament in Nicaragua.

MANAGUA (Nicaragua) – The FIBA AmeriCup 2025 is getting underway, and as teams announce their final rosters, a select group of players is expected to turn heads. Although NBA players like José Alvarado, Kyshawn George, and David Jones-García are sure to leave their mark, plenty of international superstars seem poised to keep adding accomplishments to their decorated continental careers.

Here are some of the biggest names expected to take part in the competition and help lead their countries to the gold medal:

    Bruno Caboclo – Brazil

Born: September 21, 1995 Height: 202 cm / 6'8" Position: Center Brazil is always a favorite at these events. This time, the team will be even hungrier to avenge their 2022 final loss. Aleksandar Petrovic’s team is overflowing with talent at every position, particularly at lead guard with Alexey Borges, Yago Santos, and Georginho de Paula. But Bruno Caboclo is the one who makes them truly unstoppable. The 29-year-old can do it all: score (inside and out), rebound, and protect the rim. After all, we’re talking about a player who averaged more than 16 points and 7 rebounds per game in both the Paris 2024 Olympics and the FIBA World Cup in 2023.

    Trae Bell-Haynes – Canada

Born: September 5, 1995 Height: 188 cm / 6'2" Position: Point guard Trae Bell-Haynes is the one who stirs the drink for a loaded Canadian squad. The 29-year-old will be tasked with organizing a team featuring a powerful blend of youth, experience, size, and athleticism. Especially with the presence of George and Leonard Miller on the wing. Canada will have Kyle Wiltjer to do the scoring and big men Thomas Kennedy and Mfiondu Kabengele to dominate on the boards. Bell-Haynes’ job will be to get them all involved in the offense. The Casademont Zaragoza guard averaged 5.8 assists per game during last year’s FIBA Europe Cup and 6.2 dimes during the FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers, so he’ll be ready for the assignment.

    Jahmius Ramsey – United States

Born: June 9, 2001 Height: 191 cm / 6'3" Position: Shooting guard On a team that is constantly changing rosters, Jahmius Ramsey has become a true fixture. The 24-year-old shooting guard averaged 15.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists across 6 games during the AmeriCup Qualifiers and will be tasked once again, along with Langston Galloway, with generating offense for the USA. Ramsey should be a steady force for Stephen Silas’ squad and a perfect complement in the backcourt to Euro League 2024 champion Jerian Grant. The newly-signed Pallacanestro Trieste player is ready to get fully immersed in the FIBA game, and the AmeriCup could be the perfect opportunity to break out.

    Andrés Feliz – Dominican Republic

Born: July 15, 1997 Height: 183 cm / 6'0" Position: Point guard Explosive performances with both Joventut Badalona and Dominican Republic national team earned Andrés Feliz a transfer to powerhouse Real Madrid last summer. He now brings the experience of playing at the very highest level and is expected to lead his country to a medal. This is a guy who scored 16 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists at the FIBA World Cup 2023 and who had 17.5 points and 3.3 assists at the FIBA AmeriCup in 2022. Feliz, Jean Montero, and Jones-García will form a deadly perimeter trio for the prohibitive Group C favorites.

    Gonzalo Corbalán – Argentina

Born: March 3, 2002 Height: 193 cm / 6'4" Position: Shooting guard Dramatic as it sounds, Argentina will go as far as Gonzalo Corbalán will take them during the AmeriCup. Head coach Pablo Prigioni decided to field a squad that doesn’t include Euro League superstars Facundo Campazzo, Gabriel Deck, and Nicolás Laprovítolla, or recent contributors like Leandro Bolmaro and Luca Vildoza. That leaves huge shoes to fill, but that’s exactly where Corbalán comes in. He’s emerged as the team’s leading scorer during the exhibition games leading up to the tournament, and he’s poised for a breakout performance in Nicaragua. After scoring just 8.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 2 assists across six FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers games, the 23-year-old will be asked to potentially double that output. Argentina will rely on Francisco Cáffaro and Juan Fernández on the inside, while Nicolás Brussino will bring his usual outside shooting. However, Corbalán will have to lead the offense night in and night out for his country to have a shot at keeping the crown.

    Ismael Romero – Puerto Rico

Born: June 23, 1991 Height: 203 cm / 6'8" Position: Center Ismael Romero finished in the top five in efficiency at the AmeriCup in 2022 and is now back for more in Nicaragua. The 34-year-old will man the middle for Puerto Rico once again after averaging 11.3 points and 7.5 rebounds during the Qualifiers. He shines in the biggest stages (7.3 points and 7 rebounds at the 2024 Olympics and 11.4 points and 7.4 boards at the 2023 FIBA World Cup), and this will no different. His blend of scoring and rebounding will be needed for a squad that won’t have Tremont Waters, Jordan Howard or Davon Reed around Alvarado this time. FIBA
