KINSHASA (DR Congo) – ASB New Generation are heading to the Division West Elite 16 with the aim of reaching the BAL regular season.
Following their 1–1 run at the Gymnase Multisports de la Police Nationale C in Kinshasa, they are looking to improve their win rate.
Led by the experienced Gudul Omari Mulomba, Deo Mwanyimi and Michael Tshibende, as well as Xane Dalmeida, they are aiming to put up a fight against Jeunesse Club d’Abidjan and Centre de Référence de Basketball de Tombouctou.
Here is what you need to know about ASB New Generation.
History of the club
Founded in 2012, ASB New Generation has grown from a promising local team to become one of the most consistent basketball programmes in Kinshasa.
In their debut season in the Liprobakin, the capital’s top competition, they finished eighth, but they made rapid progress.
By 2015, they had captured their first city championship and went on to dominate the next four seasons, winning four consecutive league titles.
They lifted their first DR Congo Cup the following year after defeating Mazembe 62–48 in the final, marking their breakthrough.
This success earned them a place in the 2017 FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup, where they gained valuable experience on the continental stage.
Road to BAL history
Although this is their first official appearance in the Road to BAL, ASB New Generation are no strangers to continental competition.
In 2017, they took part in the FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup, finishing 12th with a record of 1–6.
Their sole victory — an 89–80 triumph over the eventual champions, AS Salé — remains a proud moment for the club, demonstrating their ability to compete with the biggest names in African basketball.
How they qualified for the Elite 16
ASB New Generation were drawn in Road to BAL Group C and showed character and resilience throughout the preliminary round.
They finished second with a 1–1 record, losing a close contest to group winners Moanda BB (73–67), but then bouncing back to defeat New Tech Université 79–70.
This result secured their place in the Elite 16, where they will now aim to take another significant step towards the BAL.
Key Players
Gudul Omari Mulomba brings valuable European experience to the team, having played in Bulgaria and Spain.
The Congolese big man has been the heartbeat of the team, averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds and 30 minutes per game, and leading ASB New Generation in all three categories.
Deo Mwanyimi has also played a key role, contributing 12 points and 5.5 rebounds in just over 21 minutes per game. Meanwhile, Michael Tshibende provides consistent production on both ends of the court, averaging 10.5 points and 5 rebounds per game.
Coaching staff
ASB New Generation's technical team is led by Monji Bouboul Kabongo, who is assisted by Charly Buzangu and Muamba Ilunga.
All three have been involved in the club's development since its early years.
Their collective experience and continuity have helped to create a disciplined and confident team.
Upcoming opponents
In Praia, Cape Verde, ASB New Generation face a tough challenge in Group B of the Elite 16 tournament.
They are set to take on the undefeated Jeunesse Club d’Abidjan from Côte d'Ivoire, as well as Mali’s rising force, CRBT — two teams that have already made waves in their respective zones.
With their sights firmly set on qualifying for the Basketball Africa League (BAL) for the first time, New Generation are eager to demonstrate the continued growth of Congolese basketball.
