TC1: Basket Landes vs Kibirkstis-TOKS - Illegal Screen

White #9 dribbles and shoots to the basket. The referee calls a team control foul on White #25.

    Article 33.7

Legal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:

    • Was stationary (inside that player's cylinder) when contact occurred.

    • Had both feet on the court when contact occurred.

Illegal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:

    • Was moving when contact occurred.

    Outcome

Correct decision by the referee. White #25 is not stationary when setting the screen; therefore, it is an illegal screen, and a team-control foul is the correct decision.

TC2: Valencia Basket Club vs Flammes Carolo Basket - Illegal Screen

White #24 hands the ball off to her teammate, White #13, and contact occurs between White #24 and Red #2. The referee calls a team-control foul on White #24.

    Article 33.7

Legal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:

    • Was stationary (inside that player’s cylinder) when contact occurred.

    • Had both feet on the court when contact occurred.

Illegal screening is when the player who is screening an opponent:

    • Did not respect the elements of time and distance of an opponent in motion when contact occurred.

If the opponent is in motion, the elements of time and distance shall apply. The screener must leave enough space so that the player who is being screened is able to avoid the screen by stopping or changing direction. The distance required is never less than 1 and never more than 2 normal steps.

    Outcome

Correct decision by the referee. White #24 is not stationary at the time of contact, and she does not allow the moving opponent sufficient time and distance to stop or change direction. Therefore, this is an illegal screen, and a team-control foul is the correct decision.
