MOZ - Mozambique look for youngsters to step up

MAPUTO (FIBA World Championship for Women) - The need to revamp Mozambique's women's national team by bringing in some younger players has been a hot topic in recent months.

It's a good thing then that some former U18 standouts like Ingvild Mucauro and Regina Mahoche are making names for themselves and getting ready to wear the country's colours at senior level.

Mucauro, for example, may have been cut from recent Mozambique rosters, but on Sunday increased her chances of earning a place in the national team that will compete at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.

The 21-year-old had superb performances in helping Ferroviario de Maputo defeat two-time Mozambique defending champions Liga Desportiva de Maputo at Maxaquene Gym in the capital city of Maputo.

Mucauro was the best player in the tournament, so it came as no surprise that she was named the national championship's MVP.

Mozambique national team head coach Nasir Sale told FIBA.com that she "was a good choice", although he couldn't confirm her selection for Turkey 2014.

Ferroviario's 67-52 triumph over star-studded Liga Desportiva means the door might be open for potential new fits for the national team.

With the majority of the players on the Mozambican roster from AfroBasket Women 2013 playing their club basketball on home soil  - apart from Leia Dongue who plays for Primeiro D'Agosto in Angola - last weekend's final of Mozambique's national championship was littered with national team players.

But it resulted in disappointment for coach Sale, Deolinda Ngulela and Anabela Cossa. who were on the losing side for Liga Desportiva de Maputo.

Sale made it clear that the group of players who will get to represent the country at Turkey 2014 later this summer is not limited to his club.

National team veterans Deolinda Gimo, who joined Ferroviario from Primeiro D'Agosto last month, and Rute Muianga both played key roles in Ferroviario's success.

Mozambique will compete against France, Canada and hosts Turkey in Ankara's Group B at the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women.
