JPN - Mamiya and Tokashiki shine as Sunflowers go six in a row

TOKYO (WJBL/FIBA World Championship for Women) - Ramu Tokashiki and Yuka Mamiya showed why they will provide the main thrust of Japan's challenge at the FIBA World Championship for Women after taking the all-conquering JX Sunflowers to a stunning sixth consecutive WJBL Championship success.

After five finals wins in a row against Toyota Antelopes, the powerhouse club from the Japanese capital underlined why they are the most decorated club in the country's women's basketball history as they swept aside Denso Iris 3-0 to retain their coveted title.

Tokashiki rounded off a sensational season by producing a fine double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds, as well as swatting three shots in a 71-68 triumph which sealed the deal for the Sunflowers.

The frontcourt star, who was the MVP at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Women in Bangkok, was complimented on the court as usual by Mamiya, who also shone brightly.

She also found herself in the All-Tournament Team in the Thai capital last year and showcased her skills by coming to the party in the third game of the series with a vital 16 points to help her side grab their 12th WJBL crown.

And, if national team head coach Tomohide Utsumi is looking for freshen up his roster for Turkey, rising star Mikoto Onuma did her prospects no harm at all after putting herself onto the radar with an exceptional shooting night.

The 20-year-old, who played at the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women in 2010, harvested a game-high 18 points to wrap up a terrific season which has seen her establish herself as a fundamental part of the champions' core rotation.

While they didn't manage to win a game, Denso Iris did push the Sunflowers hard with every meeting decided by just four points or less.

Leading the way for the beaten finalists was the unmistakable figure of Maki Takada who amassed a typically all-action and influential 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in the last contest.

Meanwhile, Kumiko Oba - who was part of the golden roster last year - scored 16 points to continue her bid to make a return to the fold when Japan face Brazil, Czech Republic and Spain in Ankara's Group A.
